Hours of Training

During Chanukah the Barkai Center posted on Facebook and on WhatsApp groups one post for each of the eight days that showcase the important community work that is being done by our rabbis.

Below is an English translation of one of the Posts.

Each day of Chanuka we will highlight some of the light being spread by our Barkai rabbis in their communities.

How we use WhatsApp to do Chesed?

Every Wednesday in the Central Synagogue Yeshurun in Gedera where Barkai rabbi Yuval Mittelman serves he teaches a class in Parshat Hashavua called “The Service of the Soul in Light of Parshat Hashavua”. The success of the class expresses itself in the fact that it attracts many people from the general community not all of whom are necessarily religious. Over time the people who attend the class decided that while learning about the service of the soul is important , doing good is no less important for the soul.
They spoke and they acted. They established an organization and a WhatsApp group called “Doing Good in Gedera”. They invited people to report about crises that they heard about and the people in the class would volunteer  assist. Recently, the group received a report about a single parent mother who was experiencing difficulty. She wasn’t able to afford to pay for a bar mitzvah for her son. The whole class donated and within 6 hours the money was raised and the bar mitzvah was able to take place.

The Barkai Center for Practical Rabbinics aims to improve the fabric of Israeli society by intensively training Israeli rabbis in all aspects of communal rabbinics so that they can lead their communities to a more meaningful connection with Judaism and act as a unifying force in Israeli society.
